The Power of Dialogue

This book is an invitation to engage you all in the art of dialogue, a distinctive way of communication. It is a process of genuine interaction through which individuals listen to each other deeply enough to be changed by what they learn. The approach of dialogue presents us with a paradox: it is both something we already know how to do and something about which there is much to learn. In this approach, we do not merely solve problems or reach agreements; rather we try to consider the context or field in which the problem arises and wherein new agreements can be made. The intention of dialogue is to form a new basis from which we can think, act and reach a new understanding not just with others but also with ourselves. In spite of all the challenges and barriers facing dialogue, why should we resort to it? How should we channel the process of dialogue to utilize it in diverse contexts? What are the different techniques and strategies involved in the process? We will explore these and more questions in this book.

Prerna is a recent graduate with an honor in International Studies from American University. She has worked with the government, private and non-profit sectors for over 3 years. She has hands-on experiences in humanitarian relief and development work in the U.S, Belgium, India, and is now building her expertise in fragile and transition economies.
